Is this the path of Nutrition to the best diet. Nutrition has long fought against the idea that there are diets that fit like a glove on everyone, just like many marketing strategies try to sell. Personalization is the path these professionals seek to follow – adapting the diet to the needs of each person – and this is where a trend emerges: functional nutrition.
Is this the path of Nutrition to the best diet.
Despite not being a novelty, this type of nutrition has conquered more and more followers, not only because of the effectiveness in the main objective when looking for a nutritionist (weight loss) but also in obtaining more and better quality of life.
“Functional food is food with a focus on nutrition, that is, nourishing the individual with functional foods and superfoods, with a specific purpose in what the body needs”, begins by explaining to Men’s Health the nutritionist Noélia Arruda, from the NutreteNaboa clinics, Cligenus Lisboa and Cligenus Pinhal Novo.
In addition to adapting the choice of food to the needs of each person, “in functional feeding there is a special concern with the methods of cooking the food as well as the cooking point, to preserve the nutritional characteristics of the food.
In conventional food, there is not such a deep focus on the intake of two or more foods to optimize the nutritional impact, in addition to eating many foods that are not nutritionally rich ”, continues the expert.
In practice, “the meal plan is always customized to the individual’s tastes and the degree of motivation to learn about new foods. It is designed with specific foundations for the objectives of each individual and varies according to the whole environment in a new nutritional paradigm.
Customization step by step
Although the basis of functional nutrition is always the same, each nutritionist can adopt his own methodology, however, it is important to cover the “four dimensions of the individual”, explains the expert.
They are the physical side (food and physical activity), the mental side (coaching approach), emotional side (the spheres of food influence and supplementation) and spiritual side (holistic approach – meditation, reiki, bonanza). The objective is to treat the body as a whole, thus obtaining a perfect synergy between all parts.
“We start with the oral cavity – the quality of teeth, chewing, enzymes in the mouth, etc. -, including digestion, absorption, and excretion – is a very complex process that is not limited to food only ”, explains Noélia Arruda.
Clinical analyzes and medical examinations can be requested by the nutritionist to be able to better understand the person’s body – and “according to the biochemical scenario, a nutritional intervention with food and sometimes with specific dietary supplements is planned”, however, the synergy between these professionals and doctors it is always a little below the expected, “Unfortunately doctors still do little work in synergy with the prevention, as nutritionists do”, he says.
In some cases, carrying out a genetic test may be important, since “it is useless to have a healthy diet if the intestine does not work well”, because, he continues, “an individual may be tolerant to 50g of tomatoes but not be tolerant to 51g of tomato. However, in these cases, I evaluate the terrain – organism, hormones, digestive enzymes, intestine, emotional state, and food ”.
